What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word which means "Universal Life Force Energy." Rei is the essence of the source of life, and ki (or chi) is the energy or power that brings it to form.
This ancient healing art was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, an educator in Japan in the mid 1800's. Through travel, meditation and study of history's greatest spiritual leaders, he evolved the Usui System of Reiki. This system continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who are trained in the original traditions of Reiki and whose personal lives are committed to this healing art and the lifestyle which it engenders.
Reiki, when activated and applied for purposes of healing, addresses body, mind and spirit, bringing them back into balance. Reiki's purpose is to maintain a natural state of balance and wellness. Clients report that receiving Reiki on a regular basis maximizes their experience of well being and health.
When the body is out of balance, breakdowns can occur, and the body may become ill. By using Reiki regularly, the body is able to remain in balance, prepared to fight off physical or even emotional breakdowns.
Reiki is totally non-invasive and does not require physical contact. Using simple hand positions, the practitioner will place his/her hands over the area receiving the healing energy, occasionally touching the recipient. Almost always, heat and/or a vibration coming from the practitioner’s hands will be experienced. Many practitioners will communicate as they work. The practitioner’s job is to keep the space open, and to watch/listen for signs of what to do next. Many Reiki practitioners also practice distance Reiki, sending Reiki energy to recipients anywhere in the world.
Reiki practitioners offer Reiki as a complement to other therapies. It will not interfere with any other treatment, medicine or therapy, and actually may enhance their efficacy. While many individuals have experienced marked improvement with one session, periodic applications of Reiki may be necessary to attain significant, consistent gain. Just as each person is unique, each Reiki experience is unique.
Reiki in no way advises discontinuance of conventional medical care. Reiki serves as a positive adjunct to the recipient's intention to actively participate in his/her course of treatment.
